Home for thousands of abandoned children in Bulgaria is a bleak state-run institution. Deprived of a loving parent or guardian these children can suffer long term damage including malnutrition, growth and developmental delay, emotional problems and learning difficulties.
Our Baba programme helps to nurture children living in Bulgarian institutions, ensuring their need for support and stimulation are met in a close, caring relationship. Surrogate Granny’s, or ‘Baba’s’ as they are called in Bulgaria, are selected from the local community and matched to an abandoned child. The Baba’s play, talk and give one-to-one attention to each child and over time a trust and bond grows between them.
